OCT. 1,
2011- Without
question, this limited edition model is one of the most spectacular
models I've seen in over 15 years of collecting model
fire apparatus. It is "must have" for any FDNY
buff or fire apparatus collector.
This model
was crafted by
Rich Creation International Ltd
(RCI),
a Hong Kong based company specializing in maritime and
architecture models.
Displayed
on a wood base with a descriptive plaque, the model is
covered by a high quality clear acrylic cover. It
is mounted on two brass rods.
The
graphics are clear and crisp and the pant job is
outstanding that emulates the graphics and color found on
the real boat.
Compared
to the foam monitors on the real boat, the ones
displayed on the model are true to scale and design.
Like any
model, there are details that draw my attention more
than others. This model's walkways, watertight
doors, large ladder/crane with a bucket attached.
and deck lighting drew mine. WOW, the detail.
On a side note, I will fashion an American flag to hang
from the models mast.
The big
surprise was the fabric wrapped / brass latch case the model
comes in.
Even though this model will never see the inside of this
case again, it is a great addition to this museum
quality model.
Finally, I
highly recommend this model. This is one of those
rare works of art that you can't keep your eyes off
and comes around once in a collector's lifetime.
The professional craftsmen at RCI with their high degree
of professionalism and their uncompromised attention to
detail, make this model the center piece of any
collection. I promise you, no matter where it is displayed, it will
draw comments for all who view it. For those of you who
purchase it, you will not be disappointed.
On a side
note, I would love to see RCI partner with other
departments to craft models of their fireboats!

THE REAL FDNY FIREBOAT "343"
Fireboat 343 went in service at 0900 on
September 11th 2010. The boat left its berth at pier 40
at 0830 and responded to the World Trade Center site and
the crew stood on the bow for a moment of silence.
The boat's name comes from the number of FDNY members
killed in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. For
days following the terrorist attack the only water
available to the area was provided by the FDNY’s Marine
Units.
The Three Forty Three was built by Eastern Shipbuilding
Group of Panama City, FL and is the largest single
purpose fireboat built to date with the highest pumping
capacity of any fireboat ever built.
The 140-foot, 500-ton, $27 million dollar fast response
boat is the country’s largest fireboat, with a maximum
speed of 18 knots. The Three Forty Three incorporates
the latest technology available for marine vessels,
including the capability of pumping 50,000 gallons of
water per minute, nearly 30,000 gallons more than its
predecessor. It has an operating crew of seven.
One unique
feature of the boat is it's ability the protect the crew
by the use of a pressurized area that will also have
it's air supply filtered by special charcoal and HEPA
filters.
According
to the
New York City Fireboat Website,
a large ladder/crane with a bucket attached will allow
for equipment and personnel transfer to the deck of a
ship when sea conditions permit. This bucket will also
offer water/foam monitors, flood lights, and a closed
circuit video camera which can all be operated remotely
from the deck of the Fireboat. The camera feed will
allow the operator of the crane to view the deck of the
vessel on fire in order to direct the monitor streams
down onto the fire. This camera may also feed into the
command and control room to allow the Officer in Charge
a view of the ship's deck, which would not normally be
visible from the deck of the Fireboat.
On a WOW
factor of 1-5 I give this model five WOWs!
