The next project for me is to build a model of Jacksonville, FL E-27. It is a Pierce 1750 Enforcer series pumper. The project will use some parts from the Trumpeter ALF kit but most features will be scratch built. Here's the rig in front of the station.

The model will be 1/25 scale and copying the drawings to the proper size suggest this is going to be a big model. I started with the grill after marking out the dimensions on a piece of Renshape material. Renshape is an extruded material that is very easy to work with and unlike wood, has no grain. So cutting and carving is a cinch. I marked out the line work, set a piece of the material in my drillpress/mill and milled out the outline.

Once this was done, the interior portion of the grill was cut out. Four different cutters were used for shaping. Once this was done I removed the Renshape and sanded away the back and cut away the remaining material from the sides of the grill.

Then the remaining back material was sanded away until what was left inside was paper thin. I used an Xacto knife to cut the material away.

With this finished the grill shape is coming along and will be backed up by a piece of photoetch mesh. It is not exactly the same as the real grill but it is close enough. The next step is to create a mold for the grill using the Renshape grill as the master. The final grill will be done in two part resin.
