West Side

West of downtown Columbus Ohio you can find the original settlement of the area. Franklinton was settled in 1795 by Lucas Sullivant a surveyor from Virginia. The area was named name in honor of Ben Franklin who had just passed away. With the Scioto River to the north and the Olentangy River to the East the first settlements were prone to floods. The settlements where moved too slightly higher ground. The area was called the ‘Hilltop’ leaving the area south of the river called the ‘Bottoms’. The Hilltop is most noted for Camp Chase which was built in 1861 for training Union soldiers during the Civil War, later it became a Union POW camp, today Camp Chase is a cemetery for Confederate Prisoners. In the 1913 the Great Flood submerged Franklinton under 22 feet of water which killed 93 people and leaving 20,000 people homeless. The Fire, and Police departments would rescue people from the “Bottoms” and take them to the “Hilltop”.

Broad Street is the major East West street in this area with 6 lanes of 2 way traffic. At one time 3 Fire Stations 6, 10, and 17 existed on Broad street basically 2 miles apart from each other. Engine 6’s Station is closed and still standing at Mill St, and Broad. Engine 10’s New Station at 1096 W. Broad opened in 2008 right next door to their old station which still stands empty next door. Engine 17’s New station opened in 1993, again right next door to its old station which is still standing and part of a Health Center after a restoration.

Below are the Fire Replicas Engine 10 and Ladder 10 aka 'The River Rats' the Pride of the Bottoms. Engine 17 and Rescue 17 ‘The Keepers of the Hill’. Both Station are the Pride of the WestSide in the busiest Battalion (5) in the city.
