Detroit Engines

Post by JoeO » Thu Oct 17, 2019 1:19 am

Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM EST Fire Replicas will be unveiling the new Detroit engines. Here's some information on the five engines. Check out the web page at at 8:00 AM EST Thursday 10/17/19 at https://www.firereplicas.com/coming-soon/ Some of these will sell out quick since only 50 of each number were produced.

Detroit Engine 30 was organized in 1918 at a Brand new station at Rivard and Livingston. In 1940 the station was closed and Engine 30 was disbanded. In 1951 Engine 30 was re-organized at a new station at 16543 Meyers.

Detroit Engine 44 and Truck 18 were organized in 1921 at a brand new station at 35 West Seven Mile Road. As the auto industry continued to boom, Detroit’s growth was busting at the seams as well as the city expanded the Fire Department grew. In 1976 Engine 44 was disbanded, it was short lived as they were reorganized again in 1978. The 1921 station is still an active station with both Engine 44 and Ladder 18.

Detroit Engine 50 and Ladder 23 were organized in 1925 at a Brand new station at 12975 Houston. Detroit grew by 58% in the 20’s as people were immigrating or moving North for the jobs in the Motor city. Detroit was now the 4th largest city in the United States. In 1979 Engine 50 was disbanded, this was short lived as they were reorganized again in 1980. The 1925 station is still an active station with both Engine 50 and Ladder 23 (which was replicated and produced by Fire Replicas last year and have Sold Out however https://alliancescalemodels.com/fire-tr ... le-models/ has them)

Detroit Engine 52 was organized in 1926 at a new station at 5029 Manistique St. This station was one of 15 built in the 1920’s, it was also one of the 16 Engine's added to the Detroit fleet in the 20’s. Originally this was a single engine station similar to the picture of Engine 56. In 1942 during WWII while Detroit was producing some famous vehicles for the military, Ladder 31 was organized with Engine 52 and an addition for the ladder was built on to the station. The 1926 station is still an active station with both Engine 52 and Ladder 31(which was replicated and produced by Fire Replicas last year and still available at https://www.firereplicas.com/shop-by-de ... etroit-mi/ ) .

Detroit Engine 55 was organized in 1927 at a new station at 18140 Joy Road. This station was built with a second bay for a Ladder (27) that was organized in 1928. in 1927 the Detroit Airport operations begins, skyscrapers are being built downtown as the boom continues. The 1927 station is still an active station with both Engine 55 and Ladder 27(which was replicated and produced by Fire Replicas last year and still available at https://www.firereplicas.com/shop-by-de ... etroit-mi/ ) .

Detroit received 8 of these Ferrara Cinder 1500/500 engines, in 2017, they are in service as engines 30/34/44/50/52/53/55/60.

Sharp looking trucks. I've never been to Detroit, but do they have tight streets or something? Short wheel base trucks don't seem to be a mainstream choice for large departments.

Either way, Great looking models.

Thanks for sharing

Steven,
The other reason is the older Fire Station's, similar to what Chicago did with the HME's a few years back, the older stations were tight fits since most were built in the early 1900's or prior. The smaller rigs also help keep the cost down, basically bare bones engines company equipment on them.

That makes sense. Bigger departments have that ability to have dedicated engine companies and such. Out here in Rural Texas, the engines basically have to be "jack of all trades". Which in a way makes them Good at all things, but not great at one thing. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the Info Joe

Here's the inspection photos of the Detroit Engines from Fire Replicas. The details just seem to get better each time on every model produce at Fire Replicas. The first photo shows this with the hose load and foam containers, nothing like looking at new clean hose. There are still a few Ladders left, check out more pictures at Shipping will start shortly. https://www.firereplicas.com/shop-by-de ... etroit-mi/
